The Agency Against State Repression (AASR) – Bulgaria is a nonprofit organization dedicated to safeguarding civil liberties, promoting justice, and combating state-sponsored oppression. Founded in Sofia, Bulgaria, AASR was established as a public initiative committee by a group of passionate human rights defenders united by a shared vision of freedom, fairness, and the right of every individual to live free from arbitrary state repression. Our organization was created to address the growing challenges of bureaucratic overreach, institutional abuse, and threats to democratic principles, both in Bulgaria and on a global stage.
Our mission is clear: to protect citizens from administrative, economic, and judicial repression while fostering a society where state institutions serve the public with transparency and accountability. Guided by our Program Declaration, AASR is committed to ending all forms of state overreach, defending freedom of expression, and ensuring justice through fair and transparent governance. We work to investigate and expose abuses of power, provide legal and public support to those affected by state repression, and establish independent mechanisms for civic oversight. Our efforts extend to raising public awareness, advocating for policy reforms, and collaborating with international human rights organizations to amplify our impact.
AASR’s foundation is rooted in the principles outlined in our founding documents, including our Program Declaration and Statutes, which were adopted during our inaugural assembly. These documents emphasize our commitment to lawfulness, transparency, and the protection of fundamental rights. Governed by a dedicated leadership team—consisting of a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and Secretary—AASR operates with integrity and a clear focus on achieving systemic change. Our activities include organizing legal defenses, conducting public campaigns, monitoring state institutions, and engaging with global partners, such as the United Nations and the European Court of Human Rights, to uphold democratic standards.
